So, the Volvo fluids and filter change went smoothly. The CV boots... Not so much. After reassembling the car and starting it, i t wouldn’t move. The inner cv joint ju st falls apart.

Kinja'd!!!

Here’s a video of the axle out on a bench, inner driver’s side CV joint a ssembled, able to move and swivel. But pulling it out just breaks it apart, it’s supposed to stay all in one piece, no?

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Any ideas? I’ve already set up a deal for a whole new axle, but I still want to figure out what went wrong.

Nope, it’s still on there, we didn’t remove the part on the axle, the ‘core’ of the joint.

normally axles aren’t supposed to pull out far enough to disengage once mounted, so sounds like somethign went too far together?

I don't know what may have caused the axle to go bad, but I do know that they fail on the P80 chassis Volvo. Replacing them is not overly difficult, but generally speaking, the only axles that work for any length of time are the Volvo branded ones. For whatever reason the aftermarket axles don't seem to last. Good luck!

Thanks, I read the same thing numerous times online , I will be wise enough to take that advice.

Could be, not really sure. I am told that since the tolerances are so exact - that the metal is just slightly worn enough on all the parts that it slips out. It is a 22 year old part with hald a million km on it, so I guess it’s not such an unexpected thing to happen.

The Volvo axles (at least in the US) are expensive. I seem to recall them being about $400. Better than the axles for my C30 which were $900!

As far as i knew cvs will fall apart if you pull them past their limit. Don't really know

Holy moly. This Volvo dude I met will sell a used one to me for 30 USD, he has a few of these parting out. They have new boots on it, too. I lucked out on this one.

Hopefully it’ll fit lol.

Can’t tell you what went wrong. Can tell you that both CV axles on my S60 have been replaced (one proactively due to a pinhole leak that was there when I bought it, one after it started vibrating badly this winter) .

Does Raxles make axles for your Volvo? I heard they make good ones

I had a shop rep lace mine with non volvo ant they clunked from day 1. Cost 3x as much to use genuine volvo parts, and one failed after 3 years.

Have them installed by a volvo authorized facility, volvo does not honor warranty on owner installed parts.

Fcpeuro has decent prices and amazing policy. I would suggest looking at them for your volvo parts. Ipdusa.com is also a good spot for parts and tech tips.

That's normal for that style axle

You had experience with this? How do I keep it all assembled then? Whenever I put it back in the car, on full steering lock it all disassembles into the rubber boot.

If you can pull it straight apart then you have the middle piece backwards

Shipping all the way here to Croatia isn’t an option for me sadly, so I have to make do with parts I find here, or can order through local parts stores.

I’ll try to make sure to find genuine used Volvo parts, though, thanks!

The middle piece seems to be symmetrical, but just to make sure we did try both sides and had the same result :/
